AI has changed content marketing. It can research a topic, map keywords, structure an article and produce thousands of words in seconds.
AI can create content. Humans create value.
Here's the uncomfortable part: most "human-led" content isn't. It's an LLM draft with a byline attached. And as SEO becomes GEO - Generative Engine Optimization - that's exactly the content generative engines have no reason to cite.
The problem with scale
Ask an LLM to write about almost any industry and you'll get something accurate, well-structured and near-identical to everything else on the internet. If everyone uses the same models, everyone sounds the same.
To stand out in Google and in generative search, brands need what AI can't generate from probability: original human knowledge.
What AI can't replace
Experience. AI explains what companies say about an industry. A practitioner explains what actually happens - the implementation failures, the field observations, the things nobody puts in a press release.
Opinion. AI tends toward consensus. What do you believe that your competitors don't? What conventional wisdom is wrong?
Original evidence. Proprietary research, customer data, interviews, first-hand observation. This matters most for GEO, because generative engines need credible sources to construct answers from.
Judgment. AI can suggest ten angles. An expert knows which one matters - and what shouldn't be said at all.
Authenticity. Readers now recognise generic AI content on sight. The most valuable writing sounds like it came from someone who has been there.
From ranking to being cited
Traditional SEO asks: can we rank? GEO asks: will AI include us in the answer?
That shift rewards a narrower content programme, not a bigger one. Volume was an SEO strategy. Citation-worthiness isn't - it favours fewer, deeper, genuinely original assets that a model has a reason to pull from.
The model that works
AI for intelligence and scale. Humans for insight and authority.
AI finds the opportunity → humans supply the insight → AI builds and optimizes → humans validate → GEO measures the result.
AI makes content cheaper and faster. Only humans make it worth citing.
